KERTO LVL

KERTO® LVL (LAMINATED VENEER LUMBER)

Kerto LVL (laminated veneer lumber) is incredibly strong and dimensionally stable and does not distort or shrink. It can be used in a variety of applications including beams, joists, trusses, frames, roof, floor and wall elements as well as scaffold boards.

Kerto is produced from rotary-peeled 3mm graded softwood veneers, which are then glued together to form a continuous 1.8 or 2.5 metre wide product. The 21mm to 90mm thick sheets are then further machined to the finished dimensions. The result is an engineered wood product that maintains the natural beauty of wood whilst being strong enough for a wide range of construction projects.

For examples of how Kerto LVL has been used, please see our references (case studies) below or click here.

There are two key types of Kerto available in the UK:

Kerto-S Creates Long Spans

is normally supplied in the form of straight beams but it can also be specially cut and shaped as required. All the veneers are laid in the same direction, delivering a product perfect for beams, whatever the specification, and for achieving long spans with minimal deflection. Find out more -> Kerto-S.

Standard Kerto-S UK sizes are shown below. Other sizes are available on request.

Kerto-Q stabilises structures

Kerto-Q is similar to Kerto-S but with approximately 20% of its veneers laid crossways. Kerto-Q delivers exceptional dimensional stability and performs well where high compression strength is required. Find out more -> Kerto-Q

Standard Kerto-Q UK sizes are shown below. The standard maximum length is 12m.

Further processing

Kerto can be further processed in many different ways according to it's end use and the customer's wishes. The further processing service is an integral part of the customer service and supply chain.

Examples of further processing include:

  • Sanding: optical or calibrating
  • Profiling of the beam edge, e.g. tonguing and grooving
  • Special sawing: both straight and tapered shapes
  • Gluing: re-gluing for increased thickness
  • Protective treatments, e.g. against mould.

Kerto LVL Brochure

Kerto manual is a tool for the structural designer which helps in design of wooden structures according to Eurocode 5. The manual also offers a proper info package about Kerto products and their applications.

How is Kerto produced?

Finnwood Software

Individual structures made of Kerto and other Metsa Wood building products can be calculated with Finnwood software. The user friendly interface makes designing structural members such as floor joists and roof beams fast and effective. Finnwood designs according to Eurocode 5 and it's national annexes. Find our more about Finnwood.

Do you have a timber project?

If you have a project where you would like to use timber but are unsure about certain aspects of the design, Metsä Wood’s UK engineering team are on hand and can give you the help and advice that you need. Please send your drawings and information about the project to: constructionIndustryUK(at)metsagroup.com or call us on 01205 883835.

Want to know more?

If you would like to find out more about Kerto, we have two training modules ('Kerto Basics' and 'Kerto Advanced') on our Online Timber Academy. This is a free training resource for all our main products also including our range of sheet materials.
