Re-building Bairroo do Aleixo

By Gianrico Iuliano

Porto neighborhood of social housing is currently considered the most dangerous neighborhood and most stigmatized of Porto, since it is one of the main centers of consumption and drug trafficking that city. It consisted of five buildings, but currently there are only three. They are commonly called by towers for its high altitude compared to other districts of 13 floors each, with 320 homes. The vast majority of people who live there are from the Porto Ribeira. Since its inauguration made April 13, 1974 and there was only the first tower, the second tower was "stormed" about a year and a half later without meeting full. Its location makes reference to the Cedofeita, the Fluvial Portuense Club, the Cantareira, the Board of Local Town and the area of Arrábida. The then mayor of Porto, Rui Rio called for the election campaign for the term 2009-2013 the demolition of the neighborhood considering to be the best way to end the traffic problems and drug use in that neighborhood, as well as poor conditions conservation of buildings. After an iron arm with the locals, the court would ultimately give reason Rui Rio. The demolition of the neighborhood began to take place on December 16, 2011 around 11:45 min. with the implosion of one of the towers (known as post 5). On April 12, 2013, at 11: 14m was imploded another tower (called Tower 4). The inhabitants of the said towers were transferred to other neighborhoods. In its place will be a real estate project developed by Invesurb consortium, known as the Property Fund Aleixo Neighborhood. Construction can begin only after the relocation of all residents of the neighborhood Aleixo. The continuity of the facade element with the continuous addition of an extra-space that creates a filter between the environment of the house and the outside, defined as the terrace, is the basis of the volume reformulation concept. Wood is the structural element that defines the idea of the "cage" that surrounds the perimeter of the building. Remain without some strategic points of the facades filter but no shortage of references to material in the form of wooden shutters. The flooring of the balcony continues with the rifinimento homogeneous and unique elements make the final appearance of the building. Significantly, therefore, the material chosen in dialogue with the landscape and the environment considering the surrounding urbanization designed as a residential park.
