In wood we trust

By Adrián Úbeda Beltrán

We proposed project aimed at creating a constructive and wood structural system, not a closed building or a specific reform but a system applicable to any building anywhere in the world.

Therefore it was decided to create a vaulted system based on the repetition of a module. This built by the reciprocal support of interlocking wood Kerto®-S LVL beams, so that the construction has a unique detail due to it works only with compression forces. supporting a beam on another, and another and so on.

To achieve rationally contemporary spaces, it is thought to release the entire structure and so it will be  a stack of gardens (created by the bags of wood chips and soil on each floor) and dwellings will be freely distributed between the different bag slab. They may become even self built because of this. The general and open structure will be created by Kerto®-S LVL beams, the second one, the closed structure, dwellings, will be constructed by Kerto®-Q LVL panels with internal insulation and transparent cover.

The existence of garden between structure and houses allows the hygrothermal control air entering plus cleaning.

As already mentioned, the main idea is to create a cutting-edge construction system that solves the need for housing in the inner city without the demolition of old buildings is a must.

City Above the City architecture competition

Plan B : City Above the City architecture competition

Metsä Wood challenged architects and students around the world to push the boundaries of modern wood building design in the urban environment. Entrants from 40 countries created their Plan B to urbanisation using wood (Kerto® LVL – laminated veneer lumber) as the main material. The task was to design a wooden extension to an existing urban building. The entries were designed to 69 cities worldwide.
