Sustainability in Metsä Wood

We offer sustainable solutions to global challenges

Sustainability at Metsä Wood

Metsä Wood is part of Metsä Group, a Finnish forest industry group that operates in international markets. Metsä Group uses the best renewable raw material in the world – northern wood – responsibly and efficiently. Metsä Wood aims to be the global forerunner in sustainable construction through its innovative wood products, resource efficiency across the value chain and effective use of renewable material.

Metsä Wood is committed to serving three customer segments: distribution; the transport vehicle industry; and construction. By delivering high-quality wood products, we offer our customers sustainable, cost-effective and durable alternatives. Our main products are Kerto® LVL (laminated veneer lumber), birch and spruce plywood, and further processed sawn timber. Material-efficient wood products store carbon and play an important role in combating climate change.

To ensure our commitment to sustainability, we have defined our 2030 Sustainability targets, which are based on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and cover raw materials, production, products and wellbeing.

Sustainable forest management

Metsä Wood’s main raw material, wood, comes from sustainably managed northern forests where growth exceeds use. Most of the wood we use comes from forests owned by Metsä Group’s 103,000 owner-members. We want to ensure that forest growth is sustainable. In addition to wood, we purchase chemicals and other materials, as well as machinery, equipment and services, centrally. Our suppliers must comply with our Supplier Code of Conduct (SCoC) which minimises risks associated with corruption, child labour and other human rights violations.

Wood products as carbon storage

Wood products as carbon storage

Metsä Wood products are made of renewable wood raw material, which helps reduce dependence on fossil resources and offer sustainable choices for demanding and robust industries. As the trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store the carbon. Wood products lock the carbon and function as carbon storage for as long as the product is used.

Resource efficiency

Resource and energy efficiency are the basis of Metsä Wood’s sustainable and economical production.  Currently, 96% of production side streams are utilized as raw materials for other products or for renewable energy production. Side products like sawdust, wood chips and planer shavings are sold to the pulp and paper industry. Bark from round wood debarking is used to produce renewable energy for own and for community use.

Replacing fossil-based materials

Metsä Wood is working enthusiastically to reduce dependence on fossil-based materials. Currently, the raw materials used in Metsä Wood products are 97% fossil-free. Our target is to achieve 100% fossil-free raw materials by 2030. This process includes R&D work to replace adhesives and plastic packing with sustainable fossil-free materials.   In our production, we also use mainly renewable energy, and we pay attention to efficient energy use. Our mills fulfil the requirements of environmental the ISO 14001 management system.

Our sustainability targets are derived from the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals SDGs

Metsä Wood and its parent company Metsä Group are committed to the UN Global Compact corporate responsibility initiative and its principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption. The United Nations (UN) have launched the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. These 17 goals address the global challenges we face in the world, e.g. climate change and environmental degradation.

Of a total of 17 SDGs, Metsä Wood has selected the seven goals to which we contribute most in our operations. We take UN sustainable development targets and our own sustainability targets seriously, and through the continuous improvement of our operations, we are aiming to achieve a more sustainable future for all of us.

Sustainability targets guide our operations

Metsä Wood’s sustainability targets are based on Metsä Wood’s strategy and Metsä Group’s sustainability targets. These targets are set to achieve excellence in sustainability across the supply chain and in our daily work by 2030. Targets are based on the global Sustainable Development Goals – SDGs – set by the United Nations.

Metsä Wood is a forerunner in creating value with premium-quality sustainable northern wood. Sustainability and industrial efficiency are the cornerstones of our strategy. To achieve our ambitious sustainability targets, we invest in resource efficiency and focus on sustainable raw materials, a sustainable supply chain, and safe and ethical operations. We support the mitigation of climate change by aiming for fossil-free mills by 2030 with zero fossil CO2 emissions and 100% fossil-free raw materials.

Our sustainability targets focus on four themes:

  • We bring the forest to you – Raw materials and supply chain
  • We work for a better climate and the environment – Resource efficiency and environmental impacts of production
  • We offer sustainable choices – Products and services
  • We create wellbeing – Stakeholders and social impacts
