The architects designing the Market Corner extension to Leicester Market wanted a roof that would maximise the space on the vibrant trading floor.

Sustainability alongside creating a warm, welcoming environment for the community of food stalls was also a top priority:  Kerto Q, a cross bonded laminated veneered lumber panel, from Metsä Wood was the obvious solution.

Greig and Stephenson is a practice that really understands the need to combine design flair with practical community space and opted for timber over a steel frame construction for its sustainability – a decision that was applauded and encouraged by Leicester City Council.

Nigel Stephenson explained: "We tend to specify timber over steel when sustainability is a principle concern but also for the atmosphere and warmth that timber brings.  The natural aesthetic of timber compliments the functions of the market."

Once the choice of material had been made it was a question of finding a timber product that had the inherent strength to provide curved beams over an extended roof span.   Timber specialists Cowley Timber Work recommended Kerto Q because, in the words of MD Peter Hogg: "Competitors don't make laminated wood that can span as far as Metsä's".

Kerto Q gets its strength from its homogenous bonded structure.  It is produced from 3mm rotary-peeled spruce veneers glued together to form a continuous sheet.   Cross-bonded veneers make up 20% of Kerto Q, making it exceptionally strong and perfect for structural work.

The long spans available with Kerto Q enabled the architects to achieve their vision of a contemporary design with a soaring curved roof requiring minimal supporting pillars.  The result is an expansive open space complementing the original 19th Century Corn Exchange buildings and providing an area of flexible gazebo-style stalls for market visitors to build on the success of the market's recent food festivals.
