WalkSure, Finnforest’s low slip deck board, has been supplied for a number of public areas at Edinburgh Zoo. To date, over 250 sq m of the product has been supplied to the zoo and additional supply is anticipated in the future.
Providing a high resistance to slips and trips in all conditions, the WalkSure deck boards can now be found outside the Zoo’s Penguin Café, on access ramps outside the Education and Discovery Centres and at the increasingly popular high-level rope adventure course; Sky Trail. The soft rubber inlay decking was selected for its environmental credentials, the low slip footing it would provide as part of the Zoo’s duty of care as a visitor attraction, not to mention low maintenance requirements. The decking material was purchased through local merchant, The Builders Supply Company, part of the Parr Group based in Broxburn, Edinburgh.
WalkSure combines EPDM rubber as an inlay within a pressure treated timber deck board. The result is an attractive, safe surface, which has low slip potential in both wet and dry conditions; the product is independently tested to BS 7976 part 2 to conform to UK slip resistance guidelines. The precision finished deck board also reduces noise levels, comes with a 15-year guarantee and is made from premium slow-grown, treated softwood which increases durability and makes the wood more stable.
Paul Tarnawski of Finnforest comments, “A key factor for the zoo when selecting this product was its child-friendly aspect. In comparison with other low slip products on the market, WalkSure is less abrasive to children if they fall, in comparison of the more harsh aggregate inserts.”
The Zoo’s Projects Team Leader, Graeme Stoves and his team installed WalkSure. Graham comments, “We needed a low-slip solution for the walkways and areas of high foot traffic. We also wanted to make sure that whatever we used would blend nicely with the outdoor environment of Edinburgh Zoo, so the product needed to have a natural look and feel. WalkSure has delivered these requirements and on an ongoing basis it is very low maintenance so it doesn’t cost a lot to keep looking smart for visitors to use.”
WalkSure also boasts DeckMark Plus certification, which gives specifiers peace of mind that these products meet the formal performance guidance for the slip resistance rating of deckboard surfaces.
All of Finnforest’s decking products are made to exacting quality standards. The timber used in the manufacturing of WalkSure is sourced from well-managed forests and is independently certified by the PEFC to meet environmental standards. Sound environmental credentials are a key requirement for Edinburgh Zoo as it is committed to reducing its impact on the environment. In November 2009, was awarded ISO 14001 status.
WalkSure is one of a range of six different deck board choices available to facilities and building managers, specifiers and installers. The broad range features Softwood, Grassedeck, Thermowood, Composite and Hardwood.
