WalkSure decking from Finnforest has recently been installed at the Forestry Commission’s new Wyre Forest Community Education Centre in Bewdley, Worcestershire. The decking has been used to provide a colourful yet safe solution on the Centre’s balcony areas and large undercover area around the classrooms.
Wyre Forest Community Education Centre, which is run by the Forestry Commission, is largely supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund under its Landscape Partnership programme. In addition to the classrooms, the Centre also boasts a sensory garden, bird observatory and records centre. Home to a wide range of wildlife, the forest is rated as one of the top three most ecologically important forests in Britain. The new centre will enable both local people and those living further away in more urban areas the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the natural world, especially woodland.
The Centre’s decking solution, WalkSure, is low slip and combines rubber and pressure treated softwood deck board. The product, which is available in seven different colours, is not only an aesthetically pleasing and a colourful alternative to traditional decking; it is also safe slip resistant surface in both wet and dry conditions. The surface is independently tested to BS 7976 part 2 to conform to UK slip resistance guidelines making it the perfect choice for high-traffic public areas.
Grace Plant, Project Manager at Pondstart comments, “Finnforest provided the ideal solution for the Centre’s needs. With a heavy footfall at the centre it was imperative that the solution provided excellent slip resistance. What’s more, WalkSure fits well within its surrounding area and has excellent noise reduction qualities; this was another important factor for us.”
The precision finished deck board is manufactured from only the highest quality joinery grade timber. It is kiln dried in order to reduce moisture and resin content, which increases durability and makes the timber more stable.
The product is also manufactured from environmentally sound timber that is sourced from well-managed certified forests and is independently certified by the PEFC to meet environmental standards. For that extra peace of mind, the deck board also comes with a 15-year guarantee.
WalkSure, which is one of a range of six different deck board choices available, also boasts DeckMark Plus certification, which gives specifiers peace of mind that these products meet the formal performance guidance for the slip resistance rating of deckboard surfaces.
WalkSure’s versatility makes it the ideal low slip floor covering for a great number of applications across a broad variety of sectors. For example, retail, hospitality, leisure, education and industrial in both public and private projects. Most recently, Finnforest’s WalkSure has also been installed at AquaGem, an Essex-based professional swim school, as well as across a number of public areas at Edinburgh Zoo. It is also currently being installed at one of the UK's largest retail shopping centres.
