GrasseDeck provides pathway to night garden

This Year’s Hampton Court Palace Flower Show featured a unique and exciting night garden, which, by using eco-friendly lighting, gave ideas on how a garden can be enjoyed after dark.  Constructed entirely within a large blacked-out marquee, the feature required a hardwearing grass effect public walkway, which would run alongside the garden to allow visitors to view the feature while extending out to the sponsor tent.  For this, Finnforest’s Grassedeck deck boards provided the required effect while maintaining its look throughout the show.

Grassedeck brings a new dimension to standard decking by replicating the appearance of real grass.  The decking features artificial grass on softwood boards.  The resulting product is an altogether softer aesthetic, which works well in contrast to hard landscaping materials.  The attractive, low-slip product is ideal within gardens, courtyards, balconies, around spas and swimming pools; anywhere where turf is not an option.

The night garden was designed and created by award-winning garden designer, Kari Beardsell of Blue Bridge Garden Design.  Kari commented, “Each an every aspect of the garden has been carefully selected.  The planting was chosen for its colour, structural and textural qualities so, in combination with the lighting, it works hard at dusk too.  For that perfect finishing touch, we wanted grass as the pathway leading to the marquee.  However, due to the high footfall visiting the gardens at the flower show in addition to unpredictable weather, the grass was unlikely to look good for long.  The artificial grass deck gave a similar association to grass but kept neat throughout while being soft underfoot, safe in wet weather and captured the ambiance of the flowers.”

Grassedeck is a long lasting, hardwearing and easy to maintain decking.  The wood used in the manufacture of the decking is selected from only the highest quality joinery timber and machined to exacting standards.  In addition, the timber is kiln dried to reduce moisture and resin content; this increases durability and makes the wood more stable.  Furthermore, Finnforest has always been committed to forestry practices and, with this, the timber used in the manufacturing processes of all the company’s products comes from well-managed forest.  Grassedeck is independently certified in accordance with the rules of the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

Kari continues, “We were extremely pleased with the product.  It met all our needs, especially in dealing with the high footfall.  It was the ideal alternative to turf.”

In addition, all reusable material from the garden, including the decking, is being donated to Abingdon and Witney College and Wood Green School in Witney, which are both expanding their outdoor spaces.
