WalkSure deck board from Metsä Wood (formerly Finnforest) has recently been specified at Treetops School in Grays, Essex. The low-slip decking solution was selected for its safe yet attractive qualities.
The Thurrock local authority school is a special day school for children and young people between the ages of three and 19 who experience moderate learning difficulties. The school was looking to enhance its outdoor area with a safe and accessible decked walkway to an outdoor classroom. For this, Metsä Wood’s WalkSure provided the ideal solution because in addition to the low-slip properties of the decking, it offers a smart yet natural aesethetic that works well within landscaped settings.
In addition to education environments, child-friendly WalkSure decking is ideal for use in other high traffic areas such as, playgrounds, public areas, pool surrounds, clubhouses and leisure complexes. It combines EPDM rubber with pressure treated softwood in a single deck board. The finish can be specified according to the overall appearance required, with seven colours to choose from. At Treetops school a charcoal /red rubber finish was selected, to blend with the timber of the outdoor classroom. The result is a product that is low slip in both wet and dry conditions. In fact, the decking is independently tested to BS 7976 part 2, conforming to the UK slip resistance guidelines. Furthermore, in the event of slips and trips, WalkSure is less abrasive when compared to other products on the market.
Mrs Slade, School Business Manager at Treetops School commented: “The newly decked area has really transformed our outdoor space and the access to our outdoor classroom. We were looking for a solution that was not only eye-catching but also safe for the school pupils, whatever the weather. WalkSure form Metsä Wood has met these exact requirements. It also looks fantastic and blends well with the school’s outside space!”
As well as being aesthetically pleasing and safe, WalkSure is also incredibly durable. The softwood deck boards are kiln dried to reduce moisture and resin content, which makes the timber more stable and therefore more durable. This means that the decking requires very little maintenance too, perfect for local authority installations with limited time and budget. The product is also manufactured from environmentally sound timber, which carries full PEFC certification, making it ideal for local authority specification where environmentally responsible and legally sourced materials are vital.
End users and specifiers can be rest assured that the product is also of the highest quality. Metsä Wood WalkSure deck boards boast a 15-year guarantee and DeckMark Plus certification, which gives peace of mind that the product meets the formal performance guidance for the slip resistance rating.
