Distinctive wood architecture combining the new with the old

"Wood is so much more these days than just a simple column and beam structure." -Fabienne Bulle, architect. Watch Talking Wood video with Fabienne Bulle.

Challenge

The Paris Préfecture de Police headquarters located in the heart of the old centre of Paris needed an extension for a reception center. The construction site is surrounded by old, protected buildings, which means that foundation work had to be kept to minimum. The structures had to be built quickly since the site is in the busy area.

Solution

Architect Fabienne Bulle wanted to use Kerto LVL because of its lightness and fast construction time. The structures of the building are made of 30 Kerto LVL wood frames that enable long span lengths and large interior spaces.

Results

The pre-fabricated frame elements were brought to the site at night and were erected during the day. The light wood can be handled on the site without the need for heavy machinery so the drawbacks caused by building in a busy city centre were minimised.
